Health Tooth Tips
Wipe your baby’s gums with a wet washcloth after feeding especially before bed
Avoid putting your baby to bed with a bottle
Start brushing 2x/day with a soft bristled toothbrush once the first tooth appears
Start flossing 1x/day any teeth that are touching — it’s easier than you think!
Choose water instead of juice or soda
Limit between meal snacking, especially on sugary or sticky foods
Choose xylitol (gum, mints, candy, wipes, or gel)
Team brushing & flossing until age 7 (being able to tie their own shoes is a good indication independent brushing) |
What Causes Cavities
The main culprit behind tooth decay is bacteria a.k.a “sugar bugs!” Feeding bacteria more than 3-4x their favorite food of carbohydrates (both healthy and unhealthy—bacteria do not discriminate) will allow the bacteria to produce acid that will break down your teeth.
Carbs | + | Bacteria | = | Acid |
Acid | + | Healthy Tooth | = | Cavity! |
These bacteria can be passed on to others through saliva just like cold germs can!
Please don’t share cups, forks, spoons, or toothbrushes to avoid getting more bacteria.
